Grand Canyon National Park Hosts US Citizenship Ceremony

On September 20, 2024, the Grand Canyon witnessed a historic occasion: the naturalization of 30 new U.S. citizens from 11 different countries. This event, held at the Mather Amphitheater in Grand Canyon National Park, marked the return of naturalization ceremonies to this majestic location after a pause since 2019.

The event began with a heartfelt welcome from Park Superintendent Ed Keable, who was honored to greet the new citizens in such a breathtaking setting. “As you pledge your loyalty before this awe-inspiring landscape, remember that the Grand Canyon reflects the boundless opportunities this country offers,” Keable said, setting the tone for a day full of hope.

One of the most memorable moments of the ceremony was the prayer and welcoming message delivered by James Uqualla, a spiritual leader of the Havasupai. His address connected attendees with the land and tradition, giving the event profound cultural significance.

Judge Camille D. Bibles presided over the ceremony, with Court Officer Christina Davison administering the Oath of Allegiance. This act symbolized the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new chapter for individuals who have chosen the United States as their home.

The 30 new American citizens hail from countries such as Canada, Brazil, Germany, Mexico, India, New Zealand, The Philippines, Ukraine, Turkey, Venezuela, and Vietnam. Each brings a rich cultural history that enhances the nation’s diversity. During the event, the A-Train Sound group delivered a musical performance that added a festive touch. At the same time, the Northern Arizona University ROTC Honor Guard presented the colors in a solemn display.

This ceremony was part of the annual celebration of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, which highlights the importance of citizenship and the democratic values that underpin the United States. It served as a reminder of the opportunities and responsibilities of becoming a U.S. citizen and a tribute to the unity and diversity that define the nation.
